Most adults do not wake up one morning and decide to straighten their teeth. It happens slowly. You notice a front tooth sitting a little forward in a photo. You catch your reflection in the elevator on the way up to a meeting and close your lips over your smile. Maybe you wore braces as a teenager, stopped wearing the retainer sometime in college, and your teeth have been drifting quietly ever since.
That drift is normal. Teeth move throughout life, and the lower front teeth crowd first for almost everyone. The real question is what to do about it when you are thirty-five instead of fifteen, and you spend your days in meetings.
For most of our patients at Concierge Dental Design, the answer is Invisalign. I am a Platinum Invisalign Provider, and clear aligners are often the first thing I recommend before we talk about whitening, bonding, or veneers. Straight teeth make every other cosmetic treatment simpler, more conservative, and longer lasting. Here is how the treatment works, and how to tell whether it is right for you.
What Invisalign Actually Is
Invisalign is a series of clear, removable trays that move your teeth a small amount at a time. Each tray is made of medical-grade plastic, formed to your teeth, and designed to apply gentle, steady pressure in one specific direction.
We start with a digital scan instead of a tray of impression putty. That scan becomes a three-dimensional model of your bite, and I plan every movement from there: which tooth rotates, which one comes forward, how the upper and lower teeth meet at the end. The lab then makes your trays from that plan.
You wear each set for about one to two weeks, twenty to twenty-two hours a day, and take them out to eat, drink anything other than water, brush, and floss. When a set stops feeling snug, your teeth have caught up to it and you move to the next one.

How Long Does Invisalign Take?
Most adult cases at our practice run six to eighteen months. Mild crowding or a small relapse after childhood braces can finish in six months or less. Cases that involve bite correction, rotated teeth, or closing larger spaces take longer.
Here is the sequence from start to finish:
- Consultation and digital scan. We look at your teeth, your bite, and your gums, take photos and a scan, and talk about what actually bothers you.
- Treatment plan and preview. I map every movement and show you a simulation of the expected result before you commit to anything.
- Aligner delivery. Your first trays arrive within a few weeks. We place any small attachments your case needs and show you how to seat and remove the trays.
- Progress checks. You switch trays at home on schedule and see us every eight to ten weeks.
- Refinement and retention. Most cases end with a short round of refinement aligners to finish the details, followed by retainers.
The single biggest factor in the timeline is wear time. Twenty-two hours a day keeps you on schedule. Fourteen hours a day does not, and the trays stop fitting the way they should.
What Treatment Actually Feels Like
The first two or three days with a new set of trays feel tight. Patients describe it as pressure rather than pain, and it fades as the teeth respond. Switching to a new set in the evening helps, because you sleep through the tightest part.
Speech adjusts quickly. A slight lisp in the first week is common and almost always gone by the second.
A few habits take getting used to. Coffee has to come out of the trays, so most patients start drinking it in one sitting rather than over a whole morning. You brush after meals before putting the trays back in, which means keeping a toothbrush at your desk. Neither one is hard, but both are real, and it is better to hear about them now than at tray three.
Does Invisalign Work for Cosmetic Cases?
Yes, and it often works better than patients expect.
Aligners handle crowding, spacing, mild to moderate bite problems, and the drifting that follows old orthodontic work. The material and the attachment design have improved a great deal over the past decade, and cases that once needed brackets are now routine with trays.
What matters more than the appliance is the planning behind it. A cosmetic case is not finished when the teeth are straight. It is finished when the teeth sit where the rest of the plan needs them: enough room for a veneer without removing healthy enamel, a midline that lines up with the face, front teeth that show the right amount when you speak and smile.
That is why I often sequence aligners first. A patient who comes in asking for eight veneers may need four after alignment, or none at all. Moving a tooth is more conservative than reshaping it.
There are limits. Severe skeletal bite problems, some impacted teeth, and certain complex cases are better treated with braces, or with an orthodontist and a surgeon working together. If your case is one of those, I will tell you plainly at the consultation.
What Affects the Cost of Invisalign in New York City
Cost depends on the case, not on a menu price. These are the factors that move it:
- Complexity and length. A six-month case that closes a small space uses far fewer trays than an eighteen-month case that corrects a bite.
- One arch or both. Some patients only need the lower teeth treated.
- Refinement. Most plans include a round of refinement aligners. Ask whether yours does.
- Retainers and follow-up. Retention is part of the treatment, not an extra you find out about at the end.
A few practical notes on paying for it. Many PPO plans include an orthodontic benefit that applies to clear aligners, and we verify your coverage before you start rather than after. We accept more than twenty-five PPO plans. FSA and HSA dollars can usually be applied to treatment. We also offer Cherry financing and in-office payment plans that spread the cost across the treatment period.

Invisalign, Veneers, or Both?
Patients often arrive having already picked one. The honest answer is that they solve different problems.
Invisalign moves teeth. It fixes position: crowding, gaps, rotation, and bite. It does not change the color or the shape of a tooth.
Veneers reshape and brighten. They fix worn edges, chips, permanent discoloration, and teeth that are shaped irregularly. They do not correct a bite.
Many smile plans use both, in that order. We straighten first, whiten second, and then use the smallest amount of porcelain or bonding the case actually needs. Working in that sequence usually means less enamel removed, a more natural result, and a smile that holds up over time.
What Happens After Invisalign
Teeth move for your whole life. That is not a failure of treatment, it is biology, and it is why retainers matter as much as the aligners did.
We finish every case with custom retainers and a clear schedule for wearing them: nightly at first, then most nights for the long term. Patients who follow that schedule keep their result. Patients who stop wearing retainers are the ones who come back in eight years with the same crowding they started with.
This is also the point where the rest of a cosmetic plan makes sense. Whitening works more evenly on straight teeth. Bonding and veneers can be thinner and more conservative. If you want to go further, the foundation is in place.
